Four Tips To Prevent Back Pain

Most of us suffer from back pain at one point or another and it is never pleasant. There are several things you can do on a daily basis to reduce the risk of back injury or pain though, from gentle exercise through to posture. We have outlined our top tips below:

1. Gentle exercise

Regular gentle exercise can play a big role in reducing and preventing back pain, keeping you supple and flexible while strengthening your muscles and joints. Try low impact aerobic exercise, for instance swimming, and follow a gentle stretching routine, too. A strength training programme that helps strengthen your core could also be very helpful, as strong core muscles reduce the strain on your back. Your expert chiropractor will be available to advise on what will be specifically suitable for you.

2. Focus on your posture

Slouching and stooping will put your back at the most damaging angle and highly increase your chance of back pain or injury. Try not to sit down for too long at once and perhaps consider a standing desk for periods if you work in an office. When you do sit, opt for a straight back chair and try to keep your knees slightly higher than your hips, for instance by putting your feet on a low stool or platform. A strong core, as discussed above, also helps to improve posture.

3. Bend with your knees, not your back

Bending improperly can be one of the main causes of back pain. When bending to the floor, do so with your knees and keep your back in an upright position as far as possible. Remember – your knees are built to act as a hinge, your spine is not! Bending at the waist can cause serious problems, especially when picking up heavy items.

4. Check your bag

Carrying a heavy handbag or briefcase on one shoulder can cause you to stoop to one side, affecting your alignment and balance. Messenger style bags which go across your body can really help with this. The strap sits on one side of your body, with the weight of the bag resting on the other, which helps to keep your shoulders straight. Also make sure you aren’t carrying lots of things around with you that you don’t need – pack light!

At Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic, we can help with any queries you have about any back problems you may be experiencing. If you’re in constant pain, give us a call today.

Back Care for Gardeners

With the first signs of spring finally showing through, the green fingered amongst us are chomping at the bit; eager to dust the cobwebs off those gardening gloves and get back out into the fresh air.

After a long cold winter the weeds have had a free reign and the bushes might be getting out of hand, which means that before you can start to sow the seeds of this year’s garden you will probably have to put some hard work into clearing them a space.

But before you head out to do battle with the weeding, pruning and mowing, it’s important to take a few simple precautions to ensure that you don’t put undue strain on your back.

Warm Up

Do a few gentle stretches to ensure that your back and muscles are loose and relaxed. If the weather is disappointingly cold, waiting until later in the day will help you to reduce the chance of picking up a strain.

Change Positions Regularly

Repetitive movements can be bad for your joints, so try to avoid doing the same task for long periods. Move around regularly and remember to take frequent breaks – it’s a good opportunity to look back over your work and bask in your nice clean flower beds as you go along.

Avoid Heavy Lifting

Shifting a bag of compost is not a job for a single person alone. If possible, ask for help moving any heavy objects or use a trolley to ensure that you aren’t taking the strain by yourself. When you do lift things, make sure that you bend at the knees so that you can take strength from a vertical core rather than putting pressure on a bent spine.

If you do suffer from back pain as a result of gardening or any other activity it can have a debilitating effect on your everyday life, but there are ways that you can seek treatment.

Acupuncture FAQs

Here at Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic we often receive questions from patients who are interested in finding out more about how acupuncture could help them. To help you decide whether this could be a good course of treatment for you, here’s a quick overview of some of our most frequently asked questions:

How Can Acupuncture Help Me?

Many patients find that acupuncture provides effective relief from the pain of specific conditions such as sciatica or an injury such as whiplash. It can also be used as a form of relaxation that gives an enhanced feeling of well-being. Acupuncture aims to improve the general health of the whole person, rather than focusing solely on the condition that the patient has.

What Does It Involve?

To begin a treatment of acupuncture you will first need to have a consultation to give your therapist a full picture of your health. With enough information, your therapist can draw up a tailored treatment plan that will be most appropriate for your individual needs. During treatment, needles are inserted into specially chosen acupoints and are left in place or gently manipulated for a number of minutes.

Does It Hurt?

You may experience a tingling, warmth or sometimes a dull ache during treatment, but most people find the overriding sensation to be one of relaxation and many patients fall asleep! All of our acupuncturists are fully qualified and have many years of experience so you can rest assured that you are in good hands.

Is It Safe?

Independent research studies have shown that adverse reactions to acupuncture occur in less than 1 in 10,000 patients. Side effects can sometimes include tiredness, mild dizziness and occasional minor bruising, but all of these reactions are short lived. Following thorough investigations, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that acupuncture be made available on the NHS as a safe and effective treatment for pain.

Who Can Have Acupuncture?

Acupuncture can safely be used alongside any other form of medicine and is suitable for all ages including very young children.

Whether you are looking for an effective form of pain relief or simply a way to improve your general well-being, speak to our experts to find out which form of treatment will be most appropriate for you. We offer acupuncture to patients in Leamington Spa, Coventry and across Warwickshire, so call us today on 01926 865985 to arrange your first consultation.

Recognising Whiplash and Seeking Treatment

If you are involved in an accident that caused your neck to move forward or backward beyond the reach of its normal limits, it can cause damage to the tendons and ligaments. This strain is known as whiplash, and it can result in discomfort that takes months to heal.

If you suffer from whiplash, the pain you feel is caused by inflammation and bruises in the muscles of your neck. These take a little time to develop, so if you are in an accident you may not be aware that any damage has been sustained until sometime afterwards. It is common for symptoms to come on the day after an accident, and they can continue to worsen for several days.

The most common symptoms of whiplash include;

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Reduced movement
  • Muscle tenderness
  • Headaches

In some cases patients also experience pain in the lower back, muscle spasms, dizziness, tiredness, irritability, blurred vision and vertigo.

As with other strains, mild whiplash generally heals itself over time. However, if you suffer severe symptoms or they have not begun to ease after a few days then you could benefit from chiropractic treatment.

Here at Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic we offer a range of treatments to help to ease the symptoms of whiplash and speed up your recovery. Our fully trained team of experts will work with you to devise a regime of gentle exercises that are designed to improve the mobility of your neck.

We will also give you lifestyle advice to help you to combat your condition within your daily routine and get you back to normal as soon as possible.
So if you are suffering with whiplash in Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworth or the surrounding areas, call us on 01926 865985 to arrange your first consultation.

What To Do If You Think You Have a Sports Injury

Taking part in sports is a great way to have fun, relax and get some exercise, but sometimes it can lead to injuries. You can minimise the risks by making sure that you warm up properly, make use of the correct safety equipment and don’t push yourself beyond your sensible limits. But just like any other physical activity, sometimes accidents just happen.

If you feel any pain while exercising you should always stop, whether you have noticed a sudden onset or the pain has developed slowly over time. If you carry on exercising on an injury it could make things worse and ultimately slow down your recovery.

If you suffer a sudden trauma, a deep cut or show signs of concussion following a blow to the head then you should go to your nearest emergency department as soon as possible. However, if your injury does not require immediate medical assistance then a chiropractor may provide a better solution for you.

Here at Kenilworth Chiropractors we have years of experience treating a range of sports injuries, from professional sportspeople to the Sunday leagues. Our fully qualified team will spend time carefully assessing the nature of your injury and work with you to create a tailored treatment plan.

If you live in Coventry, Warwick, Kenilworth, Leamington Spa or the surrounding areas and are concerned about a sports injury, then we could help. Call us on 01926 865985 to speak to a member of our friendly team, or fill in our online enquiry form.

Posture Perfect – Taking Care of Your Back Every Day

With our busy modern lifestyles, many of us take risks with our backs on a daily basis and we aren’t always quick to heed the warning signs of any emerging problems. But taking care of your back is vitally important to help prevent discomfort now and more serious conditions in the future.

Here are a few common scenarios where you should take extra care to look after your back:

Sleeping: Your sleeping posture is especially important because you tend to move around less during the night, so a bad position often has several hours to take its toll. Different people need different things from their mattress, but the key is to make sure it’s supportive. Your spine should be parallel to the mattress without sagging or bowing, which includes the level of your head on the pillow.

Using Computers: We are spending more and more time at computers so it’s worth taking some time to make sure your set up is correct. Make sure your chair supports your lower back without tilting you too far forward or back, and that your feet reach the floor comfortably. If you use a laptop, invest in a stand that raises it to eye level.

Gardening and DIY: As with any other exercise, you should warm up by tackling the little jobs before you build up to any heavy duty lifting or bending. Make use of any tools that are available to take the strain off you, and remember to vary your position and activity every half an hour or so.

Driving: It’s important to set your car up to a suitable position, even if you share a car and this means tweaking the seat every time you drive. Your hands should rest comfortably on the steering wheel with a slight bend at the elbow and the mirrors should be positioned so that you can see without moving your head very much at all.

Back pain is one of the most common conditions that we see here at Kenilworth Chiropractors, so we understand the importance of looking after yourself in those day to day situations. If you do suffer from discomfort in your back, we will take care to assess the specific cause of pain and formulate a treatment to suit you.

How to Cope with Arthritis During the Winter Months

If you suffer from joint pain or arthritis you probably find that the pain gets worse during the cold, damp winter months. Making it more difficult for you to carry out your day to day chores or your exercise routine and it can just leave you feeling downright miserable. So what can you do this winter to alleviate the pain of arthritis?

Dress Warmly:

It may sound completely obvious and something your mum has been telling you to do for years but it really does help. If it’s really chilly outside make sure you wear gloves to keep your hands nice and toasty and wear an extra layer over your legs and your knees in particular.

Warm Water:

Having a long soak in a warm bath is both extremely relaxing as well as soothing for your joints. Swimming in a heated pool is also very beneficial for you, just ensure you don’t rush out into the cold as soon as you get out the pool, be sure to let your body’s temperature normalise a bit first.

Exercise Inside:

As we know exercise is highly beneficial for everyone no matter your age or ability, but even the most energetic of us aren’t eager to go for a run on a cold and frosty morning. Indoor exercising will be just as good for you and easier on your joints. Using a treadmill or even just taking regular walks around your indoor shopping centre would be beneficial and you could even get some Christmas shopping done while you were there.

Treat Yourself to a Massage:

Yes, you have permission to indulge yourself a little bit as a massage can release any tension and tightness in sore muscles and aching joints. And a massage will also leave you feeling completely relaxed and spoilt.

Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is another treatment than can reduce arthritic pain. Acupuncture can release pain by increasing the release of endorphins into the body, which in turn help to block pain. It is commonly used to treat arthritis as well as treating chronic pain cause by headaches, back and neck pain and muscle pain.

So when you feel that cold winter weather getting closer, dig out your winter woollies, plan an indoor exercise schedule and treat yourself to some treatments here at Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic. Prevent Back Pain by Sitting Correctly at Work

Millions of us work in offices across the country and regardless of the industry and specialism, there’s one thing that a lot of us have difficulty with and that’s back pain. Back pain can become a real problem in an office environment due to prolonged periods of sitting and limited movement. Here at Kenilworth Chiropractic we see a lot of office workers with bad back pain in Coventry coming to us for treatment but there are ways to prevent back pain and that’s by sitting properly. Here are a few tips to help you prevent back pain:

Seat Height

It’s amazing how much difference adjusting your chair to the correct position can improve and prevent developing back pains. Your chair should be at the right height to allow you to use your keyboard with your forearms and wrists parallel with the floor. If they’re sloping down or up, adjust your seat height accordingly.

Feet Flat On the Floor

Placing your feet flat on the floor will give better support to your back and your hips. If to have your seat at the right height for your arms, your feet are not flat on the ground then use a footrest. Having both feet flat on the ground also means that you shouldn’t be crossing your legs and it’s highly recommended that you don’t tuck one foot behind the other knee while sitting.

Screen Height

To avoid neck and back problems, you should have your screen at eye level so you’ll no longer have to tilt your neck up or down to see your screen properly. Aim to have the top of your screen at eye level and if the correct seat height does not allow for this, place your monitor on a stand.

Treat Yourself to a Sports Massage in Leamington Spa

A common misconception of a sports massage is that the only people that benefit from sports massage are athletes in training or footballers with muscle injuries. But the reality is that almost everyone can benefit from a sports massage. It could be just what you need after a long week at work sat in an unforgiving chair staring at a computer screen. Here at Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic we specialise in sport massage in Leamington Spa.

Sports massage is a very versatile therapy which can help with a large number of problems including:

–    Back pain
–    Generalised aches and stiffness
–    Tennis elbow
–    Post-surgical stiffness
–    Soft tissue injuries involving muscles, tendons and ligaments
–    Muscle dysfunction associated with broken bones

How does sports massage work?

Every move we make puts stress on our body and if it is a repetitive movement, the same muscles are used every time and eventually they become fatigued. For you to carry on the movement other muscles step into to take the strain and when this happens those muscles that aren’t used to working so hard can leave you with aches and pains around your body. A sports massage will help alleviate the pain by increasingly the blood flow to the tight and tired muscles. This process re-oxygenates the muscles whilst at the same time breaking down harmful lactic acid and any scar tissue. Sports massage is proven to be a very effective method, allowing your muscles to work as efficiently as they can.

So whether you are a swimmer training for the Olympics, or you spend all day lifting heavy objects or sitting in an uncomfortable position at your desk you could benefit from a sports massage. So why not treat yourself and let the experts here at Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic rid you of those uncomfortable knots and you can leave us feeling relaxed and unwound.
